Getset basis on three principles

  • motivation and responsibility: the adult learner is key person of getset: she or he chooses areas to be covered, the subjects and what kind of excercises will be done. she or he sets the goals for the work
  • dialogue and support: the role of the mentor is to facilitate the work and to make “good questions” for the adult learner; not to tell what to do or why.
  • process orientation: it may be ideal to make a preliminary plan concerning the themes and issues in advance. the plan may be changed if needed.

Getset works also in groups

  • common rules are important if the work is done and the themes are discussed in a group: commitment, equality, confidentiality and respect are important. the rules are for all group members; for the adult learners as well as for the tutors.
  • warm up exercises may be a good idea before the group sessions. you can find some examples of them in this material. however, make sure that everybody feels comfortable with this.
  • it is important to summarize the work and experiences at the end.
  • find common getset spirit! and remember that it is not forbidden to have fun together

Some considerations about guidance counselling

In guidance counselling an individual’s own actions and support for them are vital. The guidance counsellor plays an important role in, for example, motivating an individual in their work. A volunteer or professional staff member can serve as a guidance counsellor.

People plan their lives by considering what they should do and how they should do it. Guidance counselling examines and looks for various ways of doing things in order to achieve the above-mentioned goal. It is important to inform the individual about what actions will or might affect the existing problem or a plan being made. Guidance counselling looks for and considers various alternatives that the person being counselled could and would be realistically willing to try in order to solve his or her problem or make progress with their plan.
